"Socks for Heroes" Competition vs. Tesoro High School

Lance Corporal Donald Hogan who was a student of Tesoro High School, class of 2007. He and his family were also residents of San Clemente. This young hero joined the Marine Corps and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 with his unit, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. While on patrol searching for an IED, he saw an insurgent pull a trigger wire to detonate an IED. Reacting immediately, he pushed one Marine out of the way, and placed his body between the IED and the rest of his squad, and, as a result, Donald traded his life to protect the Marines he served with. For his bravery and dedication, the Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Navy Cross, the Nation’s second highest decoration for Valor.

In honor of Donald, our goal is to collect 10,000 pairs of black or brown cotton athletic crew socks to be sent to units deploying out to Iraq and Kuwait, who will be leaving October 8th. The winning high school of the drive will be announced at half time at the San Clemente/ Tesoro Football game Friday, October 2nd. Socks can be dropped off at Campus collection points, at next week’s game against Newport or on game night at Tesoro. Or, click the following link to make a donation:

A pair of socks costs about $1.00 with shipping and your donation goes directly to the purchase of socks!

More information will be communicated on campus to students, as well as online and in social media. Please help us continue to recognize the lives of true heroes like Donald Hogan through the Sock for Heroes program with his parents, Jim and Carla Hogan, who started the San Clemente Marines Corps Support Group.
